Adaptable Housing Added to BC Building Code
New standards for the design and construction of adaptable housing have been added to the BC Building Code and became effective December 31, 2009.
Information on the new standards can be found online.
ASTTBC has been a supporter in word and deed of SaferHomes, the chief proponent of this initiative. “This is great news for those who want housing that will be easily adapted as their needs change with aging”, said ASTTBC Executive Director, John Leech, AScT, CAE. “Congratulations and thanks to Minister of Housing and Special Development, Rich Coleman and the Ministry staff for their support”.
ASTTBC provided a lot of support to SaferHomes, including covering the cost for the organization’s brochure, corporate folder and other collateral. “Pat Simpson, the SaferHomes Executive Director who has worked so hard for this initiative, will be ‘over the moon’ with this announcement”, concluded Leech. ASTTBC’s Registered House Inspectors are also winners as ASTTBC established a special certification program for members to inspect against SaferHomes standards.
House Inspectors interested in learning more about this certification program can connect with Peter Link at plink@asttbc.org.
